The doctor is in on Jeopardy. Dr. Sanjay Gupta, the chief medical correspondent at CNN, began his guest host position on the game show last night (June 28). He follows a long list of other guest hosts that have stepped in for the late Alex Trebek, and fans were quick to share their opinions on his hosting abilities.
Happily, the results came out in Gupta’s favor, with viewers applauding his calm demeanor as first reactions poured in online. Some folks have even started to campaign for Gupta to take over full-time for Trebek.
“Great Jeopardy game with Dr. Sanjay Gupta,” one Twitter user wrote. “Wonderful as the host – calm, cool, collected, with tons of personality and class. And that smile!!!”

Sanjay Gupta did an excellent job on #Jeopardy
I was not expecting him to impress quite this much, and he appears to have a very high ceiling. Excited to see his progress this fortnight.

Dr Sanjay Gupta fits well with Jeopardy, his voice and gentle style seems natural for the show. @CBS

Other Jeopardy viewers, however, took issue with just how calm Gupta was with his hosting duties. Though he was smart, they wrote that he wasn’t as entertaining as past hosts.
“Sanjay Gupta not nearly as enthusiastic about the Daily Double as Savannah Guthrie or Buzzy Cohen,” one Twitter user critiqued.

Watched a bit of Sanjay Gupta hosting Jeopardy last night. He’s smart. Not very entertaining, though. My roommate fell asleep during it.
Bring on Levar Burton!

Strong first impression for Sanjay Gupta as guest host of Jeopardy, I liked him, he was relaxed and clear. Should be a good 2 weeks. Although he tended to leave out the “what is” when the players didn’t get the Q, a few other hosts have done the same and it feels weird

Even Gupta was critical of himself. The guest host opened up about hosting in an article he penned for CNN, confessing that he felt he was a “terrible” host when he began.
“My pacing was off,” Gupta recalled. “My language skills suddenly declined. I forgot to walk to certain parts of the set at the right time, and I repeated the cardinal sin of calling a response an answer.”
Gupta follows other news figureheads like Katie Couric, Savannah Guthrie, and Anderson Cooper in guest hosting Jeopardy. Other public figures that have risen to the challenge have included Dr. Oz, Bill Whitaker, Mike Richards, Aaron Rodgers, and Mayim Bialik. Former Jeopardy stars Buzzy Cohen and Ken Jennings also stepped in as host.
After Gupta, George Stephanopoulos and Robin Roberts will step in, followed by the highly-anticipated LeVar Burton. Only five guest hosts are scheduled after Gupta, with Jeopardy planning to announce the new host later this summer.
